WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

Position Summary

The Dibenjikewin Oganawenjikeg (“DO”) Manager (Family Keeper Manager) is a managerial position responsible for overseeing the work of DO (Family Keeper) team and operations per the assigned location. This position provides direct supervision, guidance, and administrative management of the DO team, including the DO, DO Owiichiitaso (DO Helper), DO Respite Workers, Clerk, and Respite Workers, and management of the DO On-call schedule for supporting case management outside of regular office hours. Further, administrative duties and responsibilities of the DO Manager include budget development for operations, financial reporting, case file reporting, and human resources decision-making.

The MDK service model provides different services within 24/7 Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (Family Care) of KIDO that require the supervision and leadership of localized managers that work together with one another. The position of DO Manager is important because Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach (“people who will want help” – similar to a service population in mainstream) that contact or are brought to the attention of KIDO may require Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) services to address any prevention, protection and other supporting needs. The DO Manager will coordinate responses with their teams and ensure that they follow a holistic approach so all dibenjikewin (family) members can become misiwe minoyaawin – physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally healthy. Working with ESU and DO Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) teams, led by their managers, and the Minoyawiibimoojikewinan (Prevention) team is required to ensure a coordinated effort is taken to address all Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach needs. At times, communication with external service providers will be required.

This position reports to their assigned KIDO Assistant Director. The hours of work are from 9:00am to 5:00pm during regular KIDO office operating hours, but this is subject to adjusted schedules and/or occasional shift work due to operational needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recruit, coordinate and maintain a list of DO team members that will report to the DO Manager, and conduct interviews, onboarding, investigations, and other administrative tasks as necessary. 
  • The DO Manager will oversee their assigned areas by the KIDO Assistant Director and ensure that DO and other reporting team members are following the 6 kaa-iishi-niibawiijikaatek (principles) outlined in section 9 of the MDK and other service as required. 
  • Provide direct supervision and guidance to their Unit and be available for consultation and direction on all dibenjikewin (family) files, and work together with the other KIDO locations and teams to ensure the ongoing circle of care for any dibenjikewinan after emergency support is provided. This will require working with the ESU Managers, On-Call Manager, and the DO Kanawendaakosowinik Manager, and Minoyaawi-Bimoojikewinan (Prevention) Coordinator.  
  • Ensure DO follow-through on the required support for any Wiijihiiwewin Onajikewin (Support Plan) and Kanawenjiikewin Onajikewin (Care Plan).
  • Work as a team alongside other MDK employees showing respect and understanding.
  • Identifying the resource of other KI and external bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (Program and Services) needed for support alongside the KIDO Services Liaisons. 
  • Participate in case file transfers between KIDO and other child welfare providers or other service to make sure support is always provided and build relationships to ensure this process is efficient.
  • Follow protocols with bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan to share information and work together, ensuring all personnel in their office are trained and understand all protocols.
  • Ensure all ESU Team Members and other specialized service providers have completed required KIDO operational and MDK service model training and understand all processes. 
  • Ensure any members of a dibenjikewin understand the MDK processes, including the KI Dispute Resolution (KIDR) process.
  • Ensure DO let awaashish/oshkaadiz know and understand that they have rights and responsibilities under Part 6 of KIDO, and the oniikihiikomaak know and understand that they have rights and responsibilities under Parts 4 and 5 of KIDO.
  • Ensure all DO understand that an Odoosisimaa/Okoomisimaa (auntie/uncle) advocate is needed for an awaashish/oshkaadiz that is involved in, or wish to be involved in, their Kanawenjikewin Onajikewin (Care Plan) or other actions involved with their file.
  • Work closely to guide DO and other office staff to focus on prevention and/or reunification, while providing as much support as possible while carrying out the mission of KIDO.
  • Participate and complete training required under KIDO, including in the areas of operational, services, and administrative (HR, Financial) functions. 
  • Ensure all DO have completed required training and develop/assist in any relevant training programs/circles, including providing any resources to other DO Onakatawapajike of MDK understand the operations of their sectors, the KIDO Emergency Services Unit and other relevant information for best practices.
  • Other duties relating to maintenance and well-being of Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach, Odoobikihaawasook, and Kanawendaakosowinik employees as requested by the assigned KIDO Assistant Director; and at times by the KIDO Director in urgent/complex situations.

Qualifications

  • Work experience of at least five (5) years with a proven ability to perform duties in the awaashish, oshkaadiz, and dibenjikewin bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (child, youth and family programs and services) is required, with experience in a management and/or emergency or after- hours response positions is an asset.
  • Completion of high school, a two (2) year community college diploma in social services, university bachelor’s degree and/or other education is an asset.
  • Have an interest in learning new skills and upgrading educational level.
  • Experience working with the community of KI and understanding of the history of KI, including the traditions and cultural teachings, is an asset.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills, with being able to communicate in the KI Anishininiimowin language an asset.
  • Must be able to coach, mentor and utilize a teamwork approach to department.
  • Must have good organizational, budget, and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team are essential.
  • Must have good computer literacy and typing skills with the ability to develop further; familiarity with computerized data systems is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the KIDO and its principles, mission, and values. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate professional integrity and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time of assigned duties and work flexible hours as required, including on-call. 
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Ability to travel as necessary for work and training, across KIDO locations to KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay, and other places.
  • Availability on short-notice and in crises situations is essential.
