WHO WE ARE:
Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

Position Summary
The Dibenjikewin Oganawenjikeg (“DO”) Onaakatawapajikeg: Kanawendaakosowinik (Family Keeper Supervisor for Place of Safety) is responsible for overseeing the work of the Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) team and buildings per the assigned location.
The MDK service model has different sectors within the Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (Family Care) branch of services that require the supervision and leadership of localized DO Onaakatawapajikeg (Supervisors). This position of DO Onaakatawapajikeg: Kanawendaakosowinik is important because any Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach (“people who will want help” – similar to a service population in mainstream) that contact or are brought to the attention of KIDO may require a safe, healthy and supportive place to stay. A KIDO-approved or KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik is important to have prepared if an alternative location to the home of the Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach or home of their close dibenjikewin (family), with a Nakoomidowin & Kichikidowin (Agreement and Declaration) under KIDO supports this.
This position will report to the assigned KIDO Assistant Director. The hours of work are from 9:00am to 5:00pm during regular KIDO operating hours during the week, but there may be adjustments to the schedule and/or occasional shift work as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Recruit, coordinate and maintain a list of KIDO-approved kanawendaakosowinik (place of safety), and conduct kabeshooninaanaakajijikewinan (home studies), approve kanawenimaawasowinik (foster homes) or dashiikewin biidahki kanawendaakosowinik (community safe home), and liaising with the odoobikihaawaso (foster parents). At times, this may include Dashiikewin Biidahki Kanawendaakosowinik (Community Safe Homes).
- Oversee the Kanawendaakosowinik Niigaaniitamaakeg (Place of Safety Team Lead) coordinating of scheduling of coverage at KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik. This includes having Kanawendaakosowinik Onihtaawikihaawaso (Place of Safety Caregivers), including full-time and casual respite employees, assigned to appropriate hours.
- Have a system in place that has Onihtaawikihaawasook (Caregivers) record and share information on Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach at the Kanawendaakosowinik for the MDK files.
- Develop reports to share in management meetings and with DO assigned to manage MDK services, with keeping their DO Onaakatawapajikeg (Family Keeper Supervisor) informed.
- Understand and work with the ESU team of KIDO and assist in urgent situations.
- When KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik buildings owned/rented by KIDO no longer have space, resource temporary locations such as hotels, short-term rentals, or declared Dashiikewin Biidahki Kanawendaakosowinik (Community Safe Homes) once approved and scheduled employees or odoobikihaawaso (foster parents) have been identified.
- Hire and onboard employees for the Kanawendaakosowinik team; and address any issues and/or incident reports brought forward; and request human resources (“HR”) as necessary. Bring on contracted workers when necessary for specific maintenance or tasks.
- Collect timesheets from full-time and casual Kanawendaakosowinik employees, and per diem forms from Odoobikihaawasook (foster parents) to submit to payroll.
- Ensure there are Kanawendaakosowinik rules and standards met for KIDO-operated buildings and KIDO-approved Kanawenimaawasowinik (Foster Homes) and that they are communicated. They must be a safe and clean environment.
- Follow and understand the MDK Policy, KI Human Resources Manual, KIDO Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy, and other KIDO-Approved Policies.
- Participate and complete training required; and ensure reporting employees do, too. This includes intensive training on KIDO and its MDK Service Model.
- Must maintain confidentiality and sign an Oath of Confidentiality form.
- To travel to attend events and programming as required.
- Work during regular KIDO office hours but can meet flexibility required to fulfil duties.
- Other duties relating to maintenance and well-being of Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach, Odoobikihaawasook, and Kanawendaakosowinik employees as requested by the assigned KIDO Assistant Director; and at times by the KIDO Director in urgent/complex situations.
Qualifications
- Work experience of at least five (5) years with a proven ability to perform duties in the awaashish, oshkaadiz, and dibenjikewin bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (child, youth and family programs and services) is required, with experience in a management and/or emergency or after- hours response positions is an asset.
- Completion of high school, a two (2) year community college diploma in social services, university bachelor’s degree and/or other education is an asset.
- Have an interest in learning new skills and upgrading educational level.
- Experience working with the community of KI and understanding of the history of KI, including the traditions and cultural teachings, is an asset.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills, with being able to communicate in the KI Anishininiimowin language an asset.
- Must be able to coach, mentor and utilize a teamwork approach to department.
- Must have good organizational, budget, and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team are essential.
- Must have good computer literacy and typing skills with the ability to develop further; familiarity with computerized data systems is an asset.
- Working knowledge of KIDO and its principles, mission, and values.
- Must be able to demonstrate professional integrity and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to manage time and work flexible hours as required, including shift-work.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
- Ability to travel as necessary for work and training, across KIDO locations to KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay, and other places.
- Availability on short-notice and in crises situations is essential.
