WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

To reach a goal of a healthy self, healthy dibenjikewin (family), and a healthy community. Our ancestors held everything sacred and thanked Kishe-Manido (Creator) for all that had been given, including the foundation to guide a strong community composed of healthy dibenjikewinan(families) who are raising awaashishag (children) and/or oshkaadizag (youth) grounded in their cultureand language.

Position Summary

Kichiihaak (Kichiihaa/Kichiikwe) are “Elders” recognized by KI Chief and Council and the fellow members based on their position as respected and trusted community members, who are wise and use their traditional knowledge to help people. Kichiihaak have a responsibility to help oniikihiikomaak ( and onihtaawikihaawasook ( by sharing their knowledge

when called upon for guidance which includes attend ing Dibenjikewin Onajikewin. (family meetings)

There is a need for Kichiihaak to be available on a casual basis to assist dibenjikewinan and KIDO staff during difficult times. Therefore, this Kichihaak position is CASUAL and be at the ready to assist and be in direct contact with awaashish, oshkaadiz and dibenjikewinan ( youth, and families) during these times. The Kichiihaak will also carry out the KIDO vision, mission and principles, and will report to the KIDO Assistant Director who is closest to their location. They will also be in regular contact with the KIDO Director and at times, the Dibenjikewin Oganawenjikeg Opimojiketamaakeg ( Board of KIDO.)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To receive intensive training on KIDO and its MDK Service Model.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of workplace information and events, and sign an Oath of Confidentiality form.
  • Responsible to assist oniikihiikomaak & onihtaawikihaawasook, as per Part 4.8 of KIDO.
  • Attend Dibenjikewin Onajikewin and help develop a plan when a critical/significant decision is to be made about the awaashish/oshkaadiz, as per Part 9.4.2 of KIDO.
  • Attend Dibenjikewin Healing Circles, which is a healing and reconciliation space for those who have been abused and who need healing.
  • Assist as required with Nepich Miinawaasowin (custom adoption) processes and sign Nepich Miinawaasowin Kichikidowin (custom adoption declaration) when necessary.
  • May be asked to participate in MDK service process as a helper with the Sakakentaakosowin Onajikewin (Safety Plan) of an awaashish/oshkaadiz or dibenjikewin, before a Naanaakajiikewin (Investigation) is carried out. Part 4.8 of KIDO outlines activities to protect the awaashish/oshkaadiz, which Kichiihaak will be trained on.
  • Required to sign-off on Kichikidowinan (declarations) and other documentation of MDK.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by KIDO Director/Assistant Directors.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional ability to show love and compassion and treat people equally and with fairness.
  • Demonstrated patience, humility, respect, consistency, discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of KI’s distinct culture, traditions, values and principles.
  • Understand that KIDO is based on language and kayaash egwa mina ahchaako kikinohamaakewin (traditional and spiritual teachings) revitalization.
  • Demonstrated understanding that KIDO is based on love, compassion, healing and reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated understanding that KIDO is part of the inherent right of KI.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the whole scope of KIDO.
  • Ability to communicate/understand KI language, Anishininiimowin.
  • Ability to travel (KI, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay).
  • Must submit clean Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
