WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

Position Summary

The Emergency Services Unit (“ESU”) Manager is a managerial position responsible for overseeing the work of the ESU team and operations per the assigned location. This position provides direct supervision, guidance, and administrative management of the ESU team, including the ESU Team Members, Respite Workers, and anyone working in specialized services on an emergency basis. This includes maintaining the schedules and ensuring adequate staffing for ESU shifts and understanding the averaging modified schedule of applicable employees.  Further, administrative duties and responsibilities of the ESU Manager include budget development for operations, financial reporting, case file reporting, and human resources decisionmaking. The MDK service model provides different services within 24/7 Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (Family Care) of KIDO that require the supervision and leadership of localized managers that work together with one another. The position of ESU Manager is important because Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach (“people who will want help” – similar to a service population in mainstream) that contact or are brought to the attention of KIDO may require emergency services at any time and day of the week and coordination among different locations in KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay will be required to access resources. This will include working with DO and DO Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) teams, led by their managers, in a coordinated effort to ensure Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach receive the services and are safe, and at times with external service providers such as other child welfare providers and healthcare facilities. This position reports to their assigned KIDO Assistant Director. The hours of work are from 9:00am to 5:00pm during regular KIDO office operating hours, but this is subject to adjusted schedules and/or occasional shift work due to operational needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recruit, coordinate and maintain a list of ESU team members that will report to the ESU Manager, and conduct interviews, onboarding, investigations, and other administrative tasks as necessary.
  • The ESU Manager will oversee the ESU Team Members at their assigned location, but may need to provide support to other locations in times of crises. They will ensure all ESU Team Members receive training and follow the 6 Principles outlined in Section 9 of the MDK Service Model with a focus on Principle 1: Danendamihiiwewiidamaakewin (Reported Concern).
  • Ensure support to dibenjikewin, awaashish, oshkaadiz and oniikihiikomaak is provided, with a focus on emergencies and first response during after-hours, as emergency services are provided on a 24/7 basis.
  • Provide direct supervision and guidance to ESU Team Members be available to for consultation and direction on all dibenjikewin (family) files, and work together with the other KIDO locations and teams to ensure the ongoing circle of care for any dibenjikewinan after emergency support is provided. This will require working with the DO Managers, On-Call Manager, and DO Manager: Kanawendaakosowinik, and the Minoyaawi-Bimoojikewinan (Prevention) Coordinator.
  • Ensure ESU Team Members have a good understanding on any Wiijihiiwewin Onajikewin (Support Plan) and Kanawenjiikewin Onajikewin (Care Plan) and follow-through where required. 6. Review case files on the database (Redmane) and complete reporting on MDK forms.
  • Work as a team alongside other MDK employees showing respect and understanding.
  • Identifying the resource of other KI and external bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (Program and Services) needed for support alongside the KIDO Services Liaisons.
  • Participate in case file transfers between KIDO and other child welfare providers or other service to make sure support is always provided and build relationships to ensure this process is efficient.
  • Follow protocols with bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan to share information and work together, ensuring all ESU Team Members are trained and understand all protocols and procedures.
  • Ensure all ESU Team Members and other specialized service providers have completed required KIDO operational and MDK service model training and understand all processes.
  • Ensure ESU Team Members let awaashish/oshkaadiz know and understand that they have rights and responsibilities under Part 6 of KIDO, and let oniikihiikomaak know and understand their rights and responsibilities under Parts 4 & 5 of KIDO.
  • Ensure all ESU Team Members understand that an “auntie” or “uncle” advocate is needed for an awaashish/oshkaadiz that is involved in, or wish to be involved in, their Kanawenjiikewin Onajikewin (Care Plan) or other actions involved with their file.
  • Participate and complete training required under KIDO, including in the areas of operational, services, and administrative (HR, Financial) functions.
  • Other duties relating to maintenance and well-being of Kewiiwiijihiikoosiwaach, Odoobikihaawasook, and Kanawendaakosowinik employees as requested by the assigned KIDO Assistant Director; and at times by the KIDO Director in urgent/complex situations

Qualifications

  • Work experience of at least five (5) years with a proven ability to perform duties in the awaashish, oshkaadiz, and dibenjikewin bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (child, youth and family programs and services) is required, with experience in a management and/or emergency or afterhours response positions is an asset.
  • Completion of high school, a two (2) year community college diploma in social services, university bachelor’s degree and/or other education is an asset.
  • Have an interest in learning new skills and upgrading educational level.Working knowledge of KIDO and MDK Service Model. 4. Experience working with the community of KI and understanding of the history of KI, including the traditions and cultural teachings, is an asset.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills, with being able to communicate in the KI Anishininiimowin language an asset.
  • Must be able to coach, mentor and utilize a teamwork approach to department.
  • Must have good organizational, budget, and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team are essential.
  • Must have good computer literacy and typing skills with the ability to develop further; familiarity with computerized data systems is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the KIDO and its principles, mission, and values.
  • Must be able to demonstrate professional integrity and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time of assigned duties and work flexible hours is essential, including shiftwork.
  • A valid driver’s license is mandatory.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • Ability to travel as necessary for work and training, across KIDO locations to KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay, and other places.
  • Availability on short-notice and in crises situations is essential
