WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

Our ancestors held everything sacred and thanked Kishe-Manido (Creator) for all that had been given, including the foundation to guide a strong community composed of healthy dibenjikewinan(families) who are raising awaashishag (children) and/or oshkaadizag (youth) grounded in their cultureand language.

Position Summary

The Emergency Services Unit (“ESU”) Team Member – Casual is a casual, shift-work position and works in a dedicated sector of KIDO for emergency services located at each KIDO location: KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay. They are tasked with ensuring Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) services of KIDO are carried out effectively in cases of emergencies, including providing responses during after-hours as required. The ESU Team Member will take a holistic approach and help dibenjikewinan work towards being misiwe minoyaawin – physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally healthy. Keeping dibenjikewinan together and reunification remains a focus in every capacity of their work. They will provide documentation and data input into the MDK database as required so their Onakatawapajike can communicate with the assigned DO and work effectively with the other sectors of the MDK. In carrying out these responsibilities, this may include working with other Children’s Aid Societies (CAS’) such as Tikinagan Child & Family Services (“Tikinagan”), with transfers/securing a kanawendaakosowinik (place of care) for awaashish/oshkaadiz.  The ESU Team Member will report to the KIDO Emergency Services Unit Onaakatawapajike (Supervisor) of their assigned location. The hours of work are assigned 12-hour shifts (or less) in 8-week cycles, and are subject to the KIDO Averaging Policy for modified schedules.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Approach all their work based on love and compassion and remain professional.
  • Complete required training with a focus on the Principle 1 of the 6 Principles of the MDK service model for danendamihiiwewiidamaakewin (reported concerns), with a focus on emergencies and first response during after-hours.
  • Work under direct supervision and guidance of assigned ESU Onakatawapajike and available to consult on KIDO MDK files and provide reports as required, especially Kitchi-iishijikewinan  Wiidamaakewin (“KIW”- Serious Occurrence Reports) and to other sectors of KIDO for emergency support and ongoing management.
  • Complete Sakakentaakosowin (Safety) Reviews and Sakakentaakosowin
  • Onajikewinan (Safety Plans) as necessary to provide an initial plan to calls, with follow-through on assessments and identify reasons from Handbook 1A of KIDO.
  • Provide support to Dibenjikewin Oganawenjikeg (“DO” – Family Keepers) as needed to complete Wiijihiiwewin Onajikewinan (Support Plans) and Kanawenjiikewin Onajikewinan (Care Plans)
  • Work in a team alongside ESU Team Members and KIDO employees respectfully.
  • Identify resource workers of other KI and external bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (Program and Services) to provide the support and help required.
  • Participate in case file transfers from a Children’s Aid Society (CAS) or other agency to ensure support is provided and build relationships for an efficient process.
  • Follow protocols and policies regarding other CAS’ and service providers on information sharing and procedures, ensuring dibenjikewinan are kept informed.
  • Follow and understand the responsibilities in KIDO and the MDK policy, as trained by the KIDO Training Department. 1Follow KIDO HR and Operational policies, including showing up for work on-time, ensuring coverage is provided when on leave, and being available for 12-hour shifts. 12. As an ESU Team Member, ensure awaashish/oshkaadiz know and understand that they have rights and responsibilities under Part 6 of KIDO; and oniikihiikomaak (parents) know and understand their rights and responsibilities under Parts 4 & 5 of KIDO
  • As an ESU Team Member, bring in “auntie/uncle” advocates for awaashish/oshkaadiz, as assigned, to Sakakentaakosowin (Safety) planning or other planning in the file.
  • Participate and complete required training as an ESU Team Member, and may assist the ESU Onakatawapajike with other KIDO Departments to understand ESU operations.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by ESU Onaakatawapajike.

Qualifications

  • Work experience of at least two (2) years with a proven ability to perform duties in the awaashish, oshkaadiz, and dibenjikewin bimoojikewinan egwa wiijihiiwewinan (child, youth and family programs and services) is required.
  • Completion of high school, a two (2) year community college diploma in social services, university bachelor’s degree and/or other education is an asset.
  • Have an interest in learning new skills and upgrading educational level.
  • Working knowledge of KIDO Vision, Mission, and Principles; and MDK Service Model.
  • Experience working with the community of KI and understanding of the history of KI, including the traditional culture and the impacts colonization has had on the community is an asset.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills, with being able to communicate in the KI Anishininiimowin language an asset.
  • Must have the ability to provide coach, mentor and utilize a teamwork approach with assigned staff.
  • Must have good organizational and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team are essential.
  • Must have good computer literacy and typing skills with the ability to develop further; familiarity with computerized data systems is an asset.
  • Must be able to demonstrate professional integrity and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to manage time of assigned duties and work 12-hour shifts as required.
  • A valid driver’s license is an asset, with opportunities to obtain available.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • Ability to travel as necessary for work and training, across KIDO locations to KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay, and other places.
  • Availability on short-notice and in crises situations is essential.
