WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

To reach a goal of a healthy self, healthy dibenjikewin (family), and a healthy community. Our ancestors held everything sacred and thanked Kishe-Manido (Creator) for all that had been given, including the foundation to guide a strong community composed of healthy dibenjikewinan(families) who are raising awaashishag (children) and/or oshkaadizag (youth) grounded in their cultureand language.

Position Summary

The Kanawendaakosowinik Onihtaawikihaawaso – KI is a full-time position that carries out the responsibilities and care for awaashishag and oshkaadizag (children and youth) who are at KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik, such as KIDO2.  Understanding the MDK services of KIDO is very important based on this, and successful candidates will receive training.  The tasks assigned to this position can include cooking meals, assisting with hygiene routines, helping with schoolwork, grocery-shopping, providing transportation to awaashish/oshkaadiz, ensuring a safe environment, and anything related to the care of an awaashish/oshkaadiz, with examples below.

This full-time position is based in KI, with hours of work being assigned on a shift schedule and flexibility of hours will be required at times to meet KIDO operational needs. This position reports to the assigned Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) Staff to coordinate the coverage schedule of KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik, at the direction of the DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik (DO Place of Safety Supervisor).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensuring awaashishag/oshkaadizag are fed, have prepared food and opportunity to be taught cooking and life skills based on age and expectations. 
  • Ensuring kitchen areas and common rooms and washroom are kept clean.
  • Ensuring young awaashishag are not left alone in kitchen/common areas by themselves, always having awaashishag in view to meet supervision requirements.  
  • Be a source of guidance by demonstrating healthy relationships and boundaries.
  • To be reliable and attend assigned shifts on time.
  • Ensure Kanawendaakosowinik has rules and that they are communicated and followed. 
  • Maintain a safe environment and safety for all, and maintain cleanliness of KIDO 2.
  • Work as a team alongside other KIDO staff showing respect.
  • Complete reporting following each shift. 
  • Adhere to all KIDO policies and procedures, including MDK Policy, KIDO HR Policies, and KI Nation policies. Participation in policy training is required and provided.  
  • the Other duties as assigned by KIDO Kanawendaakosowinik Staff, and at times by overall supervisor for Kanawendaakosowinik – DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik.

Qualifications

  • Experience, confidence and skill in working with awaashishag/oshkaadizag experiencing multiple risks and/vulnerabilities and their dibenjikewinan (families). 
  • Extensive experience in supervising and assisting awaashish and oshkaadiz.
  • Ability to ensure safety and show love and compassion to awaashish and oshkaadiz.
  • Must be professional and adhere to confidentiality requirements. 
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and good verbal skills in Anishininiimowin, the language of KI.
  • Must be able to work in a team setting, problem solve, and to multi-task when required.
  • Must be reliable and punctual, and have skills in time management. 
  • Must be available for flexible hours, including shift-work. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of KI’s distinct culture, traditions, values and principles.
  • Working knowledge of KIDO and MDK services, with training to be provided.
  • CPR and first aid training an asset, with training to be provided if not certified.
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License is an asset.
  • A Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • Ability to travel as required for KIDO operations/training.
