Kanawendaakosowinik Caregiver

The Kanawendaakosowinik Onihtaawikihaawaso is a Casual, shift-work position that works in an assigned KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) or other KIDO-approved location. The duties and responsibilities include providing the care and meeting the needs of awaashishag and oshkaadizag (children and youth) that stay at KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik. Understanding the MDK services of KIDO is very important based on these duties and responsibilities, and successful candidates will receive training.  The tasks assigned can include cooking meals, assisting with hygiene routines, helping with schoolwork, grocery-shopping, providing transportation, ensuring a safe environment, and other listed below.

This position will work their assigned 12-hour shifts that have an 8-week cycle and are subject to the KIDO Averaging Policy for modified schedules, along with other applicable KIDO policies. Flexible hours may be required at times to meet KIDO operational needs, especially during emergencies/crises.

The Kanawendaakosowinik Onihtaawikihaawaso reports to their Kanawendaakosowinik Niigaaniitamaakeg (Place of Safety Team Lead), and may receive direction from the department lead, the DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik (DO Place of Safety Supervisor).

• Ensuring awaashishag/oshkaadizag are fed, have prepared food and opportunity to be taught cooking and life skills based on age and expectations. 

• Maintain a safe environment and safety for all, including cleanliness of Kanawendaakosowinik in kitchen areas, common rooms, and washrooms. 
• Ensuring young awaashishag are not left alone in kitchen/common areas by themselves, always having awaashishag in view to meet supervision requirements.  
• Be a source of guidance by demonstrating healthy relationships and boundaries.
• To be reliable and attend assigned shifts on time.
• Ensure Kanawendaakosowinik rules are communicated and followed by fellow employees and the awaashish/oshkaadiz at the KIDO-operated Kanawendaakosowinik.  
• Work as a team with other KIDO employees in a respectful and understanding manner.
• Complete reporting following each shift including any especially Kitchi-iishijikewinan  Wiidamaakewin (“KIW”- Serious Occurrence Reports) and/or involvement of other service providers or agencies. 
• Adhere to all KIDO policies and procedures, including MDK Policy, KIDO HR Policies, and KI Nation policies. Participation in policy training is required and provided.  
• Other duties as assigned by their assigned Kanawendaakosowinik Niigaaniitamaakeg (Place of Safety Team Lead), and at times from the department lead, the DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik (DO Place of Safety Supervisor).

• Experience, confidence and skill in working with awaashishag/oshkaadizag experiencing multiple risks and/vulnerabilities and their dibenjikewinan (families). 

• Extensive experience in supervising and assisting awaashish and oshkaadiz.
• Ability to ensure safety and show love and compassion to awaashish and oshkaadiz.
• Must be professional and adhere to confidentiality requirements. 
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with being able to communicate in the KI Anishininiimowin language an asset.
• Must be able to work in a team setting, problem solve, and to multi-task when required.
• Must be reliable and punctual, and have skills in time management. 
• Must be available for assigned shift-work schedule, with flexibility required at times. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of KI’s distinct culture, traditions, values and principles.
• Working knowledge of KIDO and MDK services, with training to be provided.
• CPR and first aid training an asset, with training to be provided if not certified.
• A valid Ontario Driver’s License is an asset.
• A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
• Ability to travel as required for KIDO operations and training, including across KIDO locations and other places as assigned.
