WHO WE ARE:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI FamilyLaw and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and familyservices, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is animportant exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miinaahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).

To reach a goal of a healthy self, healthy dibenjikewin (family), and a healthy community. Our ancestors held everything sacred and thanked Kishe-Manido (Creator) for all that had been given, including the foundation to guide a strong community composed of healthy dibenjikewinan(families) who are raising awaashishag (children) and/or oshkaadizag (youth) grounded in their cultureand language.

Position Summary

The Kanawendaakosowinik Respite Worker is a causal position that steps in place of the Oniikihiikomaak/Onihtaawikihaawasook (parent/caregiver) and Odoobikihaawasook (foster parents) on a temporary basis. This means they will provide primary care to awaashish or oshkaadiz (child or youth), who are 15 years old and under, for this temporary basis and be relied upon to perform their duties with patience and compassion. These respite services will most often be for KIDO-approved Odoobikihaawasook in a Kanawenimaawasowinik (Foster Home) as this casual position is a part of Kanawendaakosowinik (Place of Safety) operations of KIDO. Understanding the Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) services of KIDO is very important, for which successful candidates will be trained on. 

This casual position is based in KI, with shift-work requiring flexibility to meet KIDO operational needs. All KIDO employees will carry out the KIDO mission, vision & principles, and their responsibilities. This position will reporting to the KI based DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik (DO Place of Safety Supervisor)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensuring awaashishag/oshkaadizag are fed. Prepare food and also teach awaashishag/oshkaadizag to cook. Teaching them life skills. 
  • Ensuring kitchen areas and common rooms and washroom are kept clean.
  • Ensuring young awaashishag are not left along in kitchen/common areas by themselves. Should keep awaashishag in view at all times.  
  • Maintain a safe environment and maintain cleanliness of Kanwenimaawasowinik.
  • Learn and ensure rules of Odoobikihaawasook for Kanwenimaawasowinik (Foster home) are followed, as well as kanawenjiikewin onajikewin (care plan) of awaashish/oshkaadiz.
  • To be reliable and attend assigned shifts on time.
  • Work as a team alongside other KIDO staff showing respect.
  • Complete reporting following each shift, including required forms from MDK Policy.
  • Adhere to all KIDO policies and procedures, including MDK Policy, KIDO HR Policies, and KI Nation policies. Participation in policy training is required and provided.  
  • Other duties as assigned by DO Onaakatawapajike Kanawendaakosowinik, as well as any designated employee assisting with scheduling.

Qualifications

  • Experience, confidence and skill in working with awaashishag/oshkaadizag (children/youth) experiencing multiple risks and/vulnerabilities and their dibenjikewinan (families). 
  • Experience in supervising and assisting awaashish and oshkaadiz.
  • Ability to carry out general household duties, such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping.
  • Ability to ensure safety and show love and compassion to awaashish and oshkaadiz.
  • Must be professional and adhere to confidentiality requirements. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of KI’s distinct culture, traditions, values and principles.
  • Working knowledge of KIDO and MDK services, with training to be provided.
  • CPR and first aid training an asset, with training to be provided if not certified.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and good verbal skills in Anishininiimowin, the language of KI.
  • Must be reliable, punctual and have skills in time management. 
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License is an asset.
  • Must be available for flexible hours, including shift-work on evenings and weekends.
  • A Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • Ability to travel as required for KIDO operations/training.
